Avenatti's Sentence Recalibration: A New Legal Chapter
Michael Avenatti's 14-year prison sentence will be recalculated following an appeals court decision. The court found errors in the original sentencing, potentially shortening his term. He is currently serving time for fraud and extortion, including charges related to extorting Nike and defrauding Stormy Daniels.
The disgraced lawyer Michael Avenatti is set to have his 14-year prison sentence reevaluated after the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals identified errors in the original judgment. This decision may lead to a reduced sentence for Avenatti, who was convicted of defrauding clients and other charges.
Avenatti, known for representing Stormy Daniels, has been serving a total of 19 years for various convictions, including attempting to extort $25 million from Nike. The recent court ruling criticized the judge for not considering the value of Avenatti's legal services and for incorrectly applying an obstruction enhancement.
Avenatti's federal public defender welcomed the appeals court decision, which also suggested his sentences could be served concurrently. He will now be resentenced, with proceedings presided over by U.S. District Judge James Selna in California.
