In a shocking incident in Maharashtra's Thane district, five members of a poll flying squad have been suspended over allegations of extortion. Among those suspended are two constables accused of threatening a flower merchant and illegally seizing Rs 85,000 from him.
The episode unfolded on October 18 at Mharal Naka, amid preparations for the November 20 state assembly polls. According to officials, the flower merchant was en route to Ahmednagar and Pune with Rs 7.5 lakh meant for paying farmers, when he was stopped and threatened by the accused.
Following a detailed investigation, a case has been filed against the officials under several sections of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. The Thane district administration confirmed their suspension on Sunday, emphasizing a zero-tolerance policy towards corruption.
