In a shocking turn of events, five members of an election flying squad in Thane, Maharashtra, face charges for allegedly extorting a flower merchant. Among the accused are two constables, charged after reportedly taking Rs 85,000 under duress.
The incident occurred on October 18 at Mharal Naka, where the flower merchant and an associate were traveling with Rs 7.5 lakh intended for farmer payments. The accused are said to have threatened to seize the money, violating the election conduct regulations in place for the upcoming state assembly polls.
Following an investigation and a poll official's complaint, police have registered a case against the group for extortion and misconduct under multiple sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. The case highlights severe procedural lapses and alleged criminal intent by public servants.
