Tensions Rise as Chinese Aircraft Carrier Passes Through Taiwan Strait
A Chinese aircraft carrier group led by Liaoning sailed through the Taiwan Strait, intensifying regional tensions. Spotted by Taiwan's defense ministry, its passage raises disputes over the strait's jurisdiction. The U.S. and its allies challenge China's claims by conducting regular patrols, asserting navigation rights.
A Chinese aircraft carrier group, spearheaded by the Liaoning, has navigated through the Taiwan Strait, stirring tensions in the region. Taiwan's defense ministry confirmed the fleet's movements after observation near the Taiwan-controlled Pratas islands.
The passage follows recent Chinese military exercises around Taiwan, with the Liaoning playing a central role. During the drills, it operated off Taiwan's southeast coast, launching aircraft from its deck amid increasing geopolitical frictions.
While China asserts sole jurisdiction over the strategic waterway, this is contested by Taiwan and the United States, who regard it as an international waterway. The U.S. Navy and allies like Canada, Germany, and Britain frequently conduct operations through the strait to uphold freedom of navigation, drawing criticism from Beijing.
