Tensions Rise as China Simulates Taiwan Blockade
A potential Chinese blockade of Taiwan, considered an act of war, could severely impact global trade, Taiwan's Defense Minister Wellington Koo warns. Recent Chinese military drills practiced such scenarios. Koo notes these exercises differ significantly from a blockade, which would be a major international issue.
Taiwan's Defense Minister Wellington Koo has issued a stark warning about the implications of a possible Chinese blockade of the island nation, labeling it as an act of war. Koo emphasized the broader impact this action could have on international trade.
The warning follows recent military exercises by China, which included simulations of blockading key ports and conducting assaults on strategic targets. Koo highlighted that these drills were intended to delineate exercise areas without instituting no-flight or no-sail zones.
Highlighting Taiwan Strait's significance, Koo noted that one-fifth of global freight transits through it, underscoring the potential global repercussions. He stated the international community could not stand idly by if such a blockade were to occur.
