ASEAN leaders convened in Laos on Wednesday to deliberate the advancement towards a South China Sea code of conduct. A consensus was reached to adopt the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) as the framework for addressing maritime conflicts, according to a Thai official.
Nikorndej Balankura, spokesperson for Thailand's foreign ministry, emphasized that the unity and centrality of ASEAN were key focuses of the leaders' discussions. The meeting underscored the collective commitment to maintaining regional stability.
The discussions highlighted the ongoing efforts by ASEAN member states to uphold international law and ensure peaceful maritime relations, solidifying the bloc's strategic role in the region's geopolitical landscape.
