In a bid to address rising tensions in the South China Sea, India and ASEAN countries have jointly emphasized the need for the effective implementation of the Declaration on the Conduct of the Parties in the South China Sea (DOC). They also stressed the swift conclusion of a significant Code of Conduct (COC) compliant with international law, including the 1982 UNCLOS.

The joint statement highlights the importance of maintaining regional peace, maritime freedom, and lawful commerce, urging adherence to international standards established by the ICAO and IMO. This call is made against the backdrop of China's assertive territorial claims, which have included aggressive actions against Philippine vessels.

A focus on maritime security, counter-terrorism, and regional cooperation was evident. Proposed measures include joint military exercises and naval visits, underscoring ongoing collaboration within the ASEAN Defence Ministers' Meeting framework. Connectivity initiatives like the India-Myanmar-Thailand Trilateral Highway were also prioritized, with plans for further extension to Laos, Cambodia, and Vietnam as part of India's Act East Policy and SAGAR vision.
