The U.S. State Department has banned former Ecuadorian leaders Rafael Correa and Jorge Glas, as well as their families, from entering the U.S. due to corruption charges. Both men were convicted of accepting bribes in exchange for favorable contracts. Correa cites political persecution, while Glas underwent a legal and personal ordeal.
The U.S. State Department announced that former President Rafael Correa and former Vice President Jorge Glas of Ecuador are barred from entering the United States on corruption charges.
According to the department's statement, both men misused their governmental roles to accept bribes, including political contributions, for government contracts.
The ban extends to their families. Correa, convicted amidst claims of political persecution, resides in Belgium. Glas, who was imprisoned in Ecuador and underwent a hunger strike earlier this year, has been a central figure in legal disputes between Mexico and Ecuador.
