Haiti's Heartbreak: Rising Death Toll in Pont-Sondé Massacre
The death toll in a gang attack on Pont-Sondé, Haiti, has reached 115. The attack is one of the deadliest in recent history, with more bodies expected to be found. Survivors have fled to Saint-Marc, and local authorities are working to ensure the community's safety amid continued threats.
The death toll from last week's horrific gang attack on the Haitian town of Pont-Sondé has surged to 115, according to local officials. This tragedy is among the most brutal massacres in the nation's recent history.
Mayor Myriam Fièvre of Saint-Marc reported the updated figure and warned that the number could climb higher as authorities face challenges accessing all the affected areas. "We are working to make sure that the population is protected," Fièvre assured in a statements.
The United Nations documented at least 70 fatalities initially, following an invasion by the Gran Grif gang. Over 6,200 residents have been displaced, seeking refuge in nearby Saint-Marc. A human rights group indicated the violence stemmed from a dispute over a self-defense group challenging the gang's control in Pont-Sondé.
