NHRC Probes Deaths of Tribal Students in MP Hostel Electrocution

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has taken suo motu cognizance of a disturbing media report about the electrocution deaths of two Scheduled Tribe students in Madhya Pradesh's Dhar district. The incident occurred while the students were cleaning a water tank on instructions from the hostel superintendent.
According to the report dated September 26, 2024, the students came into contact with a live wire inside the tank. Villagers discovered their bodies and alerted the hostel authorities. The NHRC has issued notices to the Chief Secretary and Director General of Police, demanding a detailed report within two weeks.
The Commission pointed out that the incident raises serious concerns about human rights violations and criticized the hostel authorities for their insensitivity. Following the incident, the hostel superintendent was suspended by the Dhar collector for negligence.
