Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha on Tuesday announced that the Centre has released an additional Rs 25 crore as interim assistance for the flood-battered state. This follows an earlier disbursement of Rs 40 crore from the State Disaster Response Fund (SDRF) to provide relief to affected residents.

The devastating floods in August left 39 dead and rendered lakhs homeless in the northeastern state. 'The Centre has sanctioned another Rs 25 crore under the National Disaster Response Fund (NDRF) to address the extensive damage caused by the floods. We are grateful to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah for their support,' Saha told reporters.

A six-member inter-ministerial team, led by a joint secretary from the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), completed its second assessment of the flood damage on Tuesday. Meetings were held with representatives from various departments, including Public Works Department (PWD), water resources, agriculture, and power sectors. The state has submitted a memorandum seeking Rs 7,200 crore in aid, though the total estimated loss is around Rs 15,000 crore.

'The central committee will determine the final amount to be allocated,' an official added.
