The abrupt postponement of the University of Mumbai's senate elections has drawn sharp criticism from Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Aaditya Thackeray. Describing the move as an insult to the court and a blow to the university's reputation, Thackeray voiced concerns over governmental interference in the varsity's autonomous operations.
Following the Maharashtra government's decision to delay the MU senate elections scheduled for September 22, Thackeray remarked that a future MVA government would scrutinize the vice-chancellor's repeated stallings of the election process. He suggested the vice-chancellor's actions were politically motivated.
The postponement has raised eyebrows, with Thackeray insinuating that the Shiv Sena-led government fears a potential victory by the Yuva Sena in the elections. He further criticized the administration's widespread aversion to conducting various local polls, labeling it undemocratic. An official statement cited the involvement of the Maharashtra Public Universities Act to justify the delay.
