In a high-stakes joint operation, Iraqi forces and American troops have successfully killed a senior commander with the Islamic State group, Abu Ali Al-Tunisi. Known for his infamy, the US had placed a $5 million bounty on his head.
The campaign, which commenced in late August in Iraq's Anbar province, was a coordinated effort involving the Iraqi National Intelligence Service and the air force. The offensive also brought down IS deputy commander, Ahmad Hamed Zwein.
The operation not only saw the demise of key IS figures but also the confiscation of weapons, computers, smartphones, and explosive belts. The culmination of efforts identifies 14 IS leaders through DNA tests, underscoring the sustained threat posed by IS sleeper cells in the region.
