Over 40 students sustained injuries on Tuesday during clashes with security forces in Imphal. The students attempted to march towards Raj Bhavan to press for the removal of the Director General of Police (DGP) and the state's security advisor, according to police sources.
Thousands of students and women protesters aimed to march on BT Road but were intercepted near Congress Bhavan by security personnel. Protesters responded by shouting slogans and pelting stones and glass marble balls, prompting security forces to deploy tear gas to disperse the crowd.
Manipur University students also joined the protest, burning an effigy of Union Home Minister Amit Shah and heading towards the state secretariat, only to be stopped at Kakwa in Imphal West district. In response to the escalating situation, an indefinite curfew has been imposed in Imphal East and West, alongside the suspension of internet services statewide for five days to prevent the spread of hate speech and videos. Two additional CRPF battalions have been deployed to maintain order.
