Tensions soared in West Bengal as Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) workers clashed with police during a 'Gherao' of the District Magistrate's office in Cooch Behar. The protest was over the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital rape-murder case that has ignited widespread outrage.
In Siliguri, BJP demonstrators gathered outside the SDO Office, seeking justice for the victim and calling for the resignation of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. A BJP protester announced plans for block-level protests across Bengal on September 4 and a state-wide roadblock from 12 pm to 2 pm on August 6.
Protests by junior doctors in Kolkata demanded the immediate resignation of Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Goyal. Meanwhile, in Alipurduar, police used water cannons to disperse BJP workers protesting against the incident. The protests are not isolated; they resonate with the broader call for woman's safety in the state.
In Alipore, Kolkata, BJP protesters gathered outside the DM Office, demanding swift action. The death of the woman trainee doctor in the seminar hall of RG Kar Medical College on August 9 has led to nationwide demonstrations by healthcare professionals for better security laws.
The Calcutta High Court ordered the transfer of the case from local police to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). Civic volunteer Sanjoy Roy has been arrested in connection to the incident, as BJP leaders amplify their demands for the resignation of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.
