C Lalchhandami, chairperson of the Mizoram State Commission for Women (MSCW), has resigned amidst opposition protests led by the Mizo National Front (MNF) over her appointment, citing an age bar, an official confirmed on Sunday.
Lalchhandami submitted her resignation letter to the Social Welfare Department secretary on Saturday. The MNF had argued she had surpassed the age limit for the position and her appointment was unlawful as per the Mizoram State Commission for Women Act 2004, which states any chairperson must be under 65 years of age.
Despite defending her eligibility, Lalchhandami chose to resign to safeguard the commission's image, citing political vendetta. She highlighted her achievements during her five-month term, noting the commission had resolved more cases than in previous years.
