Power Struggle: DERC Delays Continue Due to Member Appointment Issues

The Delhi Electricity Regulatory Commission (DERC) has yet again delayed the announcement of a new power tariff for the city. This is due to delays in appointing two new members to the panel. The delay has been attributed to ongoing disputes between the Delhi government and the LG Office.

For the fourth consecutive year, the Delhi Electricity Regulatory Commission (DERC) has failed to announce a new power tariff for the national capital. This delay stems from the pending induction of two new panel members, a situation exacerbated by ongoing disputes between the Delhi government and Lt Governor's Office, according to sources.

Sources reveal that the DERC's delay originated from last November when the Supreme Court set up a committee to select two members for the commission. Although the committee recommended Ram Naresh Singh and Surender Babbar as protem members in March, bureaucratic hurdles and the chief minister's judicial custody have stalled their appointment. The Lt Governor approved their appointments in August, but the members have yet to take the mandatory oath of office.

The file detailing the oath procedure has been pending with Delhi's power minister since August 8, allegedly due to 'irregularities.' According to a senior power department official, this delay is hampering the DERC's ability to function, including setting the new annual power tariff, sparking concerns from the Union Power Ministry.
