The alarming incident began just before 6 p.m. (1000 GMT) roughly nine miles from London, when police responded to reports of multiple vehicles being targeted by gunfire on Interstate 75 in Laurel County. Shots were said to have originated from a wooded area.
London Mayor Randall Weddle took to Facebook to urge the public to avoid I-75 around Exit 49 and to use alternate routes. Police have yet to apprehend the suspect. Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear confirmed the incident on X (formerly Twitter), advising residents to stay away while more details are being gathered.
