In a landmark decision, the Jharkhand cabinet has approved Rs 5 lakh medical insurance for lawyers, benefiting about 30,000 practitioners in the state. This was decided during a Cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Hemant Soren on Friday.

The cabinet also doubled the pension for advocates aged 65 and above from Rs 7,000 to Rs 14,000 per month. Additionally, newly enrolled advocates will now receive a monthly stipend of Rs 5,000, providing much-needed financial support early in their careers.

Furthermore, the cabinet authorized a grant-in-aid of Rs 1.5 crore to the Jharkhand Advocate Welfare Fund Trustee Committee for the financial year 2024-25. A total of Rs 9 crore will be distributed for providing insurance benefits to state employees and retirees.

Advocate General Rajiv Ranjan highlighted that Jharkhand is the first state to implement such comprehensive welfare measures for advocates, setting a national example. Chief Minister Hemant Soren's promises to lawyers have now been fulfilled, garnering widespread approval from various lawyer organizations.

Additionally, a hostel for tribal students will be constructed at a cost of Rs 50 crore, and the 'Jharkhand Mukhyamantri Mainiya Samman Yojana' has been expanded to include women aged 18 and above, granting them financial assistance of Rs 1,000 per month.
