In a significant move, U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken declared on Thursday his intention to advocate for the renewal of a United Nations mandate aimed at supporting an international security mission in Haiti.
This mission, which was initially approved for a 12-month period, has largely faltered as a result of minimal ground troop presence and far fewer financial resources than expected.
Blinked underscored the urgency of extending the mandate in order to combat the armed gangs that have taken control of large swaths of the Haitian capital and expanded their influence to surrounding areas.
