The US government has secured the release of 135 political prisoners from Nicaragua, who arrived in Guatemala to apply for asylum permits to enter the United States.
National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan stated the release was on humanitarian grounds, underscoring that no one should be imprisoned for peacefully expressing their fundamental rights.
Among those released were 13 members of a Texas-based religious charity, students, and other citizens. The move was praised by Nicaraguan human rights advocate Haydeé Castillo, though she noted that the release entailed forced displacement.
