Battle Over Censorship: Brazil's Conservative Party Challenges Ban on Musk's X
A conservative party in Brazil is challenging a Supreme Court judge's ban on Elon Musk's X platform. The dispute, involving issues of censorship, freedom of expression, and the freezing of Starlink's assets, has significant implications for Brazil's legal system and democratic values.
A Brazilian conservative party is pushing back against a judicial ban on Elon Musk's X platform, potentially heightening a prolonged dispute over censorship and hate speech in the nation.
Partido Novo has contested the decision by Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes at a higher court, complicating the contentious debate with Musk's business interests. 'This is about freedom of expression - we want X back to normal in Brazil,' said Jonathan Mariano, a candidate for Rio de Janeiro's city council.
Moraes recently ordered X blocked after it failed to remove accounts accused of spreading disinformation and hate speech. He also froze the assets of Musk's Starlink satellite firm, which Musk criticized as draconian.
Partido Novo's challenge to Moraes' decision will be heard by Justice Kassio Nunes Marques. While no decision date is set, Marques is expected to proceed swiftly. Marques, appointed by former President Jair Bolsonaro, might elevate the case to a wider court panel.
Brazil's President Lula da Silva has supported Moraes' actions, asserting that wealth should not equate to lawlessness. In contrast, Musk labeled Lula a puppet of Moraes. Experts like Vera Chemim argue that the asset freeze is unlawful, while others like Carlos Ayres Britto view X and Starlink as interconnected entities.
The controversy also involves Brazil's Bar Association, which has requested the reversal of fines imposed for VPN use to access the banned platform.
