In a significant legal development, the Allahabad High Court has requested the Uttar Pradesh government to respond to a writ petition that contests the premature release of former BJP MLA Udaybhan Karwaria. Karwaria was serving a life sentence for the 1996 murder of Samajwadi Party MLA Jawahar Yadav.
The release order was sanctioned by Uttar Pradesh Governor Anandiben Patel on July 21, 2024, following recommendations from the state government, and Karwaria was released on July 25. The release was grounded in his exemplary conduct in jail.
Vijma Yadav, the widow of Jawahar Yadav and a current Samajwadi Party MLA, filed the petition against Karwaria's release. A division bench comprising Justice Rajiv Gupta and Justice Surendra Singh has issued a notice to Karwaria and directed a counter-affidavit from the government counsel within four weeks. The case has been scheduled for its next hearing thereafter.
