A female police officer in Assam was captured on video slapping a protestor near the state secretariat, according to an order issued on Wednesday. The incident has prompted an official inquiry into the matter.

The woman was part of a group protesting an eviction drive in Guwahati. Commissioner of Police Diganta Barah directed Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (East) Moitrayee Deka to conduct the inquiry and to submit the findings as soon as possible.

The group had gathered to protest against eviction drives in Silsako Beel, a natural waterbody in the city that has been encroached upon over the years. As the protestors attempted to march towards the assembly, police intervened, and during the resulting chaos, a policewoman was filmed slapping a female protestor. The protestors were then taken into preventive custody and removed from the area.

The police commissioner's order stated, 'An enquiry is hereby ordered to look into the genuineness of the news item and, if it is genuine, then to find out the facts and circumstances leading to the incident.'
