The Romanian government announced on Wednesday its intention to purchase Moldova's Danube River port of Giurgiulesti from the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) in an effort to strengthen its logistics presence in central and southeast Europe.

Located close to Moldova's borders with Romania and Ukraine, Giurgiulesti port is strategically positioned 134 kilometers from the Black Sea, accessible by both river and sea vessels. Romania, a key ally of Moldova and a supporter of its EU membership bid, sees acquiring the port as a strategic move.

The EBRD took control of Danube Logistics SRL, the operator of Giurgiulesti port, in 2021. Since Russia's 2022 invasion of Ukraine, Romania has emerged as Ukraine's primary alternative grain export route. Investments, including EU funds, have flowed into Romania's main Black Sea port of Constanta, enhancing its capacity. On Wednesday, Romania's government approved a memorandum to negotiate with the EBRD for acquiring Danube Logistics SRL, aiming to edge out competition and further expand Constanta port as a market leader.
