Following the arrest of Telegram Chief Pavel Durov in Paris over offences linked to his messaging app, India's IT Ministry has engaged the Ministry of Home Affairs for updates on possible violations within the Indian context, according to sources.

An email sent to the IT Ministry requesting comments went unanswered.

In light of the French incident, the IT Ministry has prompted the Ministry of Home Affairs to examine complaints pending against Telegram and determine possible actionable steps. They noted that the IT Ministry isn't an investigative body, with focus areas differing from those of law enforcement agencies.

Sources emphasized the need to evaluate if complaints exist, the context in India, the current status, and necessary actions.

Asked whether Telegram could invoke the safe harbour clause as a messaging app, sources clarified that collaboration with law enforcement is mandatory, including sharing of information and assistance in investigations.

Telegram founder and CEO, Pavel Durov, was detained at Paris-Le Bourget Airport over an arrest warrant accusing his platform of facilitating money laundering and drug trafficking.

Durov, a dual citizen of France and Russia, was apprehended on Saturday upon arrival from Azerbaijan, as per reports.
