Spain's Strategic Efforts: Curbing Migration and Addressing Sahel Crisis
Spain's Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez visits West Africa to address surging migration to the Canary Islands and counter Russian influence in the Sahel. With migrant numbers rising sharply, Spain aims to bolster relations with Mauritania, Senegal, and Gambia, and re-engage militarily in Mali amid ongoing regional crises.
Spain's Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez embarks on a crucial visit to West Africa, marking his second trip this year, to manage the increasing migration flow to the Canary Islands and to curb Russia's influence in the Sahel region.
The migration route from West Africa has experienced a staggering 154% increase this year, straining resources on the Canary Islands. Spanish authorities are bracing for up to 150,000 more migrants in the coming months.
A significant portion of these migrants are from Mali, driven by conflict and economic instability, partly due to the Russian mercenary group Wagner. Sanchez's mission includes enhancing ties with Mauritania, Senegal, and Gambia, all key departure points for migrants.
