Two police officers lost their lives, and three others were left unconscious after a brutal attack by the Islamic Movement of Nigeria in Abuja on Sunday.

According to police spokesperson Josephine Adeh, the attack was unprovoked, with the banned group wielding machetes, improvised explosive devices, and knives, leading to the destruction of police vans.

The Islamic Movement of Nigeria was banned in 2019 after violent protests demanding the release of its jailed leader. Earlier accusations included an attempted assassination of a former army chief, which allegedly resulted in the death of more than 300 of the group's members in 2015. The group's leader, El Zakazy, was imprisoned from 2015 to 2021.
