Raising questions over the law and order situation in Assam, opposition parties led by the Congress on Friday demanded exemplary punishment for those behind the alleged gang rape of a 14-year-old girl in Nagaon.
The Mahila Congress staged a demonstration in front of the state party headquarters, fearing for their own safety in light of such incidents. State Mahila Congress president Mira Borthakur, leading the demonstration, mentioned that the Chief Minister had noted 23 similar rapes in recent months, stressing that women are not safe.
Borthakur criticized the Chief Minister's attempts to create a Hindu-Muslim divide among rapists and called for fast-track court punishments regardless of religion. State Congress president Bhupen Kumar Borah, in a social media post, demanded exemplary and quick punishment to deter future incidents. The opposition is united in their call for swift justice and greater awareness against such crimes.
