A criminal was apprehended in Jammu and Kashmir's Samba district, where authorities recovered an illegal pistol and five live cartridges from his possession, officials confirmed on Friday.

The individual, identified as Mohd Latief alias Latief Punjabi of Hoshiarpur in Punjab, was detained during routine checks at Chak Dayala near Basantar bridge, according to official sources.

Officials stated that Latief is named in numerous criminal cases, including attempt to murder, theft, rioting, abetment, and violations under the Arms Act in both Samba and Punjab. 'A team intercepted a man exhibiting suspicious behavior near Basantar bridge. Upon stopping and searching him, one pistol and five live cartridges were discovered in his possession,' said police.

A case has been filed against Latief, and further investigations are in progress.
