An explosion at the pharmaceutical factory of Escientia Advanced Sciences in Andhra Pradesh, southern India, claimed at least 17 lives and injured 36 others following a chemical solvent leak, according to an internal government report obtained by Reuters on Thursday. The blast occurred around noon on Wednesday.

The solvent leak, during the manufacturing process of a pharmaceutical ingredient for export, originated on the first floor and cascaded to the ground floor, creating a heavy solvent vapor cloud that ignited near the power panel, the inquiry report revealed.

Workers attempting to contain the leak were caught in the explosion, Escientia Group's Chief Financial Officer Srinivasa Rao Korada stated. Local police lodged an initial report against the company citing a potential lack of precautionary measures.

The firm is cooperating with authorities to determine the cause of the leak, hindered by smoke and fire that delayed immediate investigation. The solvent was identified as Methylene Tertiary Butyl Ether (MTBE), a flammable agent. The state's chief minister announced an inquiry and expressed hope for improved safety standards to prevent future incidents.
