NHRC Demands Detailed Report on Alleged Sexual Assault in Maharashtra School

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) on Tuesday requested a comprehensive report from Maharashtra authorities concerning the alleged sexual assault of two four-year-old girls in a school washroom in Thane district and the delay in filing an FIR.

The NHRC took cognizance of the case after thousands of protesters blocked railway tracks at Badlapur station and stormed the school's premises where the incident reportedly took place.

The accused, a cleaner employed to maintain the girls' toilets, allegedly assaulted the children on August 12-13, 2024. The Commission has issued notices to the Chief Secretary and Director General of Police of Maharashtra, seeking detailed reports within two weeks.

Criticism has emerged over the 12-hour delay in registering the parents' complaint. Concerns have also been raised about the lack of a female staff member for cleaning the girls' washroom, a standard safety measure.

The NHRC has stressed the necessity of a thorough investigation and requested updates on the victims' health and well-being, including any provided counseling or support services. Further, the Commission seeks information on preventive actions being taken to avoid future incidents.
