The West Bengal government has constituted a special investigation team (SIT) to delve into alleged financial improprieties at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, where the body of a postgraduate trainee doctor was found earlier this month, according to an official notification.

Headed by Swami Vivekananda State Police Academy Inspector General Dr. Pranav Kumar, the four-member SIT will be authorized to access any necessary documents from government departments and private agencies, as per the notification issued by the West Bengal Home Department on August 16.

The SIT has been tasked to complete its investigation within one month. Dr. Kumar will be assisted by DIG Murshidabad Range Waquar Reza, DIG state CID Soma Das Mitra, and Kolkata Police Deputy Commissioner Central Indira Mukherjee. This SIT formation coincides with a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into the alleged rape and murder of the postgraduate trainee doctor at the hospital on August 9, sparking nationwide protests among medics for better workplace safety.
