Ten CISF personnel, including one posthumously, were awarded the police medal for gallantry on the eve of Independence Day for their bravery during a terrorist encounter in Jammu in April 2022, just two days before Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit.
The Union Home Ministry issued a statement identifying those recognized: Assistant Sub Inspector Shankar Prasad Patel (killed in action), head constables Pramod Patra, Surendra Kumar Baliyan, R Nitin, and constables Ankit Chauhan, Punit Kumar, Rajesh Kumar, Amir Soren, Ram Naresh Gurjar, and Waded Vithal Shantappa.
According to the CISF, two heavily armed terrorists attacked their picket near Chaddha camp in the Sunjawan area, triggering a fierce exchange of gunfire. Despite the ensuing chaos, CISF personnel managed to avert a major terrorist attack, and the assailants were later killed by security forces. The heroic efforts of these personnel, particularly Patel, who made the supreme sacrifice, were crucial in containing the threat.
