The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has taken action against 10 call centre operators accused of defrauding customers of tech giants Amazon and Microsoft by posing as technical support and luring them with attractive upgrade offers, officials confirmed on Friday.
The agency registered the FIR against these call centres following complaints from Microsoft, with five also implicated in a separate case filed by Amazon. The cases, registered on October 4 last year, were disclosed under a special court's directive.
According to the CBI, the accused call centres charged international customers for bogus technical solutions when they attempted to activate Amazon devices like fire sticks. For Microsoft, the scam involved sending 'pop-up' messages that urged victims to call a number to resolve a supposed threat, leading to fraudulent charges.
