Manipur Chief Minister N. Biren Singh has voiced serious concerns about illegal immigration, describing it as a significant threat to the state's indigenous populace. Addressing the state assembly, Singh stated that individuals who entered after 1961 should be deported with the central government's help.
In reply to legislator Leishiyo Keishing's query, Singh called for unity to confront the issue, noting that the state's 398-km porous border with Myanmar complicates immigration control. A cabinet sub-committee has identified around 2,480 illegal immigrants, though this number may be revised. The creation of new villages by illegal immigrants complicates matters further, he explained.
Sheltering illegal immigrants will attract punishment, Singh warned, underscoring the importance of deporting all illegal immigrants to safeguard the state's future. He revealed that 10,675 illegal immigrants had been detected over the past five years, with significant numbers from Myanmar, Bangladesh, Norway, China, and Nepal.
