Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Monday accused the Modi government of planning to 'gag' digital media, social media, and OTT platforms through the Broadcasting Services (Regulation) Bill. She claimed that the country will not tolerate such actions.
Sharing quotes from historical figures Mahatma Gandhi and Jawaharlal Nehru, Priyanka Gandhi emphasized the enduring struggle for freedom of speech and the press. 'Civil liberties and freedom of the press are the great legacy of our martyrs and freedom fighters,' she stated.
The Congress party has repeatedly labeled the proposed bill as a direct threat to media freedom and a precursor to excessive surveillance. Supporting voices on social media have also voiced concerns, while the government maintains that the bill is still in the drafting stage and open for stakeholder consultation.
