A strike by Israeli forces on a tent camp for displaced Palestinians in southern Gaza has resulted in 65 casualties, the enclave's civil emergency service reported early Tuesday. The Israeli military stated the target was a Hamas command center.

Eyewitnesses described at least four missiles hitting the camp near Khan Younis in what is designated as a humanitarian zone. The camp, filled with civilians fleeing conflict-ridden parts of Gaza, saw at least 20 tents catch fire and craters up to nine meters deep from the explosions.

Hamas refuted claims made by the Israeli military, stating no militants were present in civilian areas. The conflict, which began on Oct. 7 with a Hamas attack on Israel, continues to inflict heavy casualties and displacement among Gaza's population.
