Thousands of mourners attended funeral ceremonies on Sunday for the 12 children and teenagers killed by a rocket strike in the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights as Israel vowed swift retaliation against the Hezbollah militia in Lebanon.

Hezbollah denied responsibility for the attack, the deadliest in Israel or Israeli-annexed territory since Hamas' Oct. 7 assault. Israeli jets targeted southern Lebanon overnight, and a stronger response is expected following Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's return from his U.S. visit. A security cabinet meeting is scheduled for 4 p.m. (1300 GMT).

Funerals took place in Majdal Shams, the Druze village in the Golan Heights, as families and mourners gathered. Israeli authorities blame Hezbollah, pointing to evidence of an Iranian-made rocket. UN officials have called for maximum restraint to prevent the conflict from escalating into a regional catastrophe.
