Sardar Raja Iqbal Singh, the Leader of Opposition in the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD), has written to Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena, urging his intervention in appointing a Dalit mayor as mandated by the DMC Act. Singh, a BJP leader, also called for the constitution of the Sixth Delhi Finance Committee, pointing out a significant backlog of funds affecting the MCD.

In his letter, Singh expressed concerns over the delayed mayoral elections, which should have occurred during the first MCD House meeting in April. He accused the MCD of functioning unconstitutionally for the past 18 months and criticized current mayor Shelly Oberoi for holding office against the stipulations of the Delhi Municipal Corporation Act.

Shelly Oberoi, AAP's candidate, was elected mayor in compliance with the DMC Act that reserves the first-year mayoral position for a woman. However, Singh argues that a mayor from the Scheduled Caste community should have been elected in the first meeting of the year 2024-25, in accordance with the Act, a responsibility that remains unfulfilled.
