Press Freedom Conflict: Selina Cheng's Fight Against The Wall Street Journal

Selina Cheng, the new chair of the Hong Kong Journalists Association (HKJA), has alleged that her job at The Wall Street Journal was terminated after she declined a request from her supervisor to withdraw from the election for HKJA's leadership post.

Cheng revealed in a press briefing that she was informed by a senior editor that her position was cut due to restructuring. However, Cheng attributed her dismissal to her refusal to step down from the HKJA board, which she has been part of since 2021. She was reportedly told her role would be 'incompatible' with her job.

Dow Jones, the publisher of The Wall Street Journal, confirmed personnel changes but refrained from commenting on individuals. The newspaper reiterated its commitment to press freedom both in Hong Kong and globally in a statement.
