Recently unearthed U.S. intelligence has revealed an Iranian plot to assassinate former President Donald Trump, prompting the Secret Service to escalate protective measures for Trump, according to a CNN report on Tuesday.

While the White House declined to comment on specifics, it emphasized that no foreign or domestic accomplices were indicated in the recent attempted assassination of Trump. Iran has strongly refuted the allegations, labeling them as 'unsubstantiated and malicious.'

Concerns over Tehran's potential retaliation have persisted since Trump ordered the assassination of Iranian military commander Qassem Soleimani in January 2020. Adrienne Watson, spokesperson for the White House National Security Council, noted that tracking Iranian threats against Trump administration officials remains a top priority. Intelligence about the plot was reportedly passed on by a human source.

An official mentioned that after learning of the enhanced threat, the National Security Council coordinated with the Secret Service, leading to additional protective measures for Trump. The Trump campaign was also alerted to the evolving danger.

In a statement to Reuters, Iran's mission to the United Nations declared the accusations to be unfounded and malicious, yet emphasized their stance that Trump should face legal prosecution for Soleimani's assassination. Amid criticisms of the Secret Service's handling of a recent shooting incident involving Trump, President Joe Biden has commissioned an independent review to scrutinize the security lapse.
