German Finance Minister Christian Lindner emphasized on Monday in Brussels that all European Union member states must adhere to fiscal rules. His comments came ahead of a meeting with other finance ministers.
'I expect every member state to be compliant with our fiscal rules,' Lindner remarked when questioned about France's deficits. 'It's in our best common interest to maintain the sustainability of our public debt.'
Lindner urged the EU to prioritize progress on the capital markets union rather than considering the accumulation of further public debt.
