In a significant development, a court in Pakistan on Sunday placed ex-Prime Minister Imran Khan and his wife, Bushra Bibi, into the custody of anti-corruption officials for an eight-day remand as part of a new Toshakhana corruption probe.

The couple was detained by the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) immediately after a district court acquitted them in their un-Islamic marriage case on Saturday. The court also issued an order for their subsequent release, pending other charges.

The new case was presented before Judge Muhammad Ali Warraich in an accountability court, which held proceedings within the confines of Adiala Jail citing security reasons. Following legal arguments, the judge approved an eight-day remand, set to extend up to 40 days if necessary.

Khan, visibly dissatisfied with the media's absence, demanded their presence before the hearing commenced. Addressing the judge, Khan iterated that Bushra Bibi's imprisonment was aimed solely at causing him distress, and accused higher authorities of vendetta against him due to past decisions involving the military establishment.

The case alleges that the couple purchased state gifts unlawfully during Khan's tenure. This marks the third Toshakhana case against Khan, who has faced numerous legal challenges since his ouster in April 2022. Despite some recent legal victories, Khan continues to battle against what he describes as politically motivated charges.
