Inspector General of Police Kashmir, VK Birdi, on Saturday instructed security forces to enhance surveillance and implement robust security measures for Muharram-related events in the valley.

Birdi chaired a security review meeting attended by senior officers from various agencies including the police force, Criminal Investigation Department, Intelligence Bureau, Sashastra Seema Bal, Central Reserve Police Force, Border Security Force, and Indo-Tibetan Border Police.

The focus of the meeting was on security preparations for Muharram, including the management of religious processions, crowd control, traffic regulation, and law and order maintenance.

IGP Kashmir emphasized the need for detailed coordination with both Sunni and Shia communities to ensure the peaceful conduct of events. He also stressed the importance of heightened surveillance on potential threats and mischief-makers.

Officers were advised to visit imambargahs and mosques for security reviews and to hold coordination meetings with community members. District heads were directed to devise comprehensive security plans and route strategies to prevent any untoward incidents.

The ongoing annual Amarnath Yatra and its current status were also discussed during the meeting.
