Explosions Near Yemen: Rising Maritime Threats
British security firm Ambrey reported two explosions near a merchant vessel off Yemen's coast. One missile impacted water, another exploded mid-air. The vessel withheld identification transmissions. The Houthi group has been targeting shipping routes with drone and missile strikes since November, impacting maritime security significantly.
British security firm Ambrey reported early Friday that a merchant vessel experienced two explosions approximately 21 nautical miles (39 km) west of Yemen's Mocha. One missile hit the water while another detonated in the air.
The vessel, which was withholding its automatic identification system transmissions, relayed this information to Ambrey. The firm is investigating the vessel's potential links to the Houthi target profile.
Since November, Yemen's Iran-aligned Houthi group has been launching drone and missile attacks in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden. These attacks are purportedly in support of Palestinians amidst the conflict in Gaza. The Houthis have previously sunk two vessels, seized another, and caused the death of at least three seafarers.
