Tens of thousands took to the streets of Dhaka on Sunday in opposition to protests planned by Sheikh Hasina's Awami League, escalating political tension in Bangladesh. The protestors included members from diverse political factions such as the Bangladesh Nationalist Party, Jamaat-e-Islami, and other groups who demonstrated from Saturday midnight.
Shafiqul Alam, Press Secretary to the interim Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus, warned against any rallies by describing the Awami League as a 'fascist party' in a Facebook post. He emphasized that law enforcement would strictly handle any attempt to disrupt order, amid fears of heightened tensions following Hasina's ousting in August.
In response, Awami League announced a rally to commemorate Nur Hossain's death anniversary and called for the removal of undemocratic forces. Awami League plans to counter the interim government with legal actions at the ICC, accusing them of crimes against humanity, while critics deem this move as retaliatory.
