Indonesia's Bold Green Energy Vision Sparks Global Investment Interest
Indonesia announces a massive renewable energy initiative, targeting 75 GW of green power over 15 years to reduce carbon emissions. With support from international investors, the plan includes solar, hydro, geothermal, nuclear projects, and carbon offset endeavors. Prabowo Subianto emphasizes reforestation and global cooperation for sustainable growth.
Indonesia is advancing its renewable energy ambitions, unveiling a 15-year plan to develop 75 gigawatts (GW) of green power projects. This initiative, announced by climate envoy Hashim Djojohadikusumo during the COP29 summit, signifies President Prabowo Subianto's dedication to transitioning the nation towards sustainability.
The plan is part of Indonesia's commitment to achieve carbon neutrality by 2060, with a focus on replacing coal-fired plants with renewable sources like solar, hydro, geothermal, and nuclear. Although nuclear energy remains a contentious issue due to Indonesia's seismic activity, the government is pushing forward with this diverse energy strategy.
Further efforts include carbon offset projects and a large-scale reforestation plan covering 12.7 million hectares, with possible backing from global entities like the Bezos Earth Fund. These projects aim to simultaneously reduce carbon emissions and attract substantial international investment.
