The cooperation between India and Japan is now viewed within the broader context of a free, open, and rules-based Indo-Pacific, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar stated on Tuesday. Speaking at the third India-Japan 2+2 Foreign and Defence Ministerial meeting, Jaishankar emphasized mutual efforts to support and understand each other's goals while collaborating with other like-minded nations.

Jaishankar noted that the bilateral relationship has evolved into a Special Strategic and Global Partnership over the last decade. He attributed this growth to expanding interests and activities, stressing the importance of having reliable partners in an increasingly volatile and unpredictable world. According to Jaishankar, both nations are working to strengthen each other's positions and foster deeper cooperation with other friendly countries.

Highlighting the relevance of the Indo-Pacific framework, Jaishankar said India's engagement in the region aligns with its Act East policy. As the countries celebrate the 10th anniversary of their Special Strategic and Global Partnership, Jaishankar underscored that the 2+2 meeting should focus on future steps. Prime Minister Narendra Modi echoed these sentiments, reaffirming the role of the India-Japan partnership in fostering peace, stability, and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific.

Earlier in the day, Jaishankar met his Japanese counterpart Kamikawa Yoko, noting the progress in bilateral ties. Defense and Foreign Ministers of Japan met Prime Minister Modi on Monday to review advancements in defense and security cooperation. Modi praised the deepening partnership, emphasizing its contribution to regional peace and stability.

The previous rounds of India-Japan 2+2 ministerial meetings were held in 2019 in New Delhi and in 2022 in Tokyo.
