A massive earthquake with a magnitude of 7.0 struck off the eastern coast of Russia, triggering the eruption of the Shiveluch volcano, CNN reported, citing TASS. The eruption sent an ash column soaring up to 8 kilometres above sea level.

Shiveluch volcano is situated around 280 miles from Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, a city of approximately 181,000 residents in Russia's Kamchatka region. According to the US Geological Survey, the earthquake's epicentre was about 55 miles from Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky and had a depth of 30 miles.

Though there were no reports of injuries or major damage, buildings are being examined for potential structural issues, particularly social facilities, as per CNN's report. Meanwhile, no tsunami warning was issued by the Russian Emergencies Ministry, but the US Tsunami Warning System noted the possibility of hazardous waves within 186 miles of the epicentre along the Russian coast.

Tremors prompted regional residents to evacuate their homes. Reports indicated that furniture had toppled and dishes were broken. The Kamchatka branch of the Geophysical Service of the Russian Academy of Sciences reported an aftershock with a magnitude of 4.7 occurring at 07:21 Kamchatka time (22:21 Moscow time) on Saturday.
